Pool Filter Cleaning
Cleaning pool filter cartridges and media is not something you get around to when the water looks off. It is the single most important step in maintenance that keeps everything else in your system working properly. A dirty filter forces your pool pump to work harder, shortens equipment life and lets fine particles circulate back into the pool water. At 1 Pool Care, Adrian Mole has been servicing pool filters across Perth since 2003. He knows what fails in this climate and why.

Pool Filter Service
Your pool filter is the workhorse of the entire system. Every litre of pool water passes through it, and when the filter is not doing its job, nothing downstream works the way it should. Whether you are running a cartridge filter, a sand filter or a glass media filter, the filter needs regular attention to trap particles effectively and maintain flow. Without proper service, dirt, body oils, sunscreen residue and fine debris build up on the filter material. That build up means less water volume passing through the system and forces the pump to push harder, which increases energy costs and wears out seals and bearings faster than they should. It also creates safety issues because a pool with poor filtration can harbour bacteria even when the chlorine reads within range.
Adrian checks the pressure gauge at every visit. When pressure increases above the normal range for your specific filter, that is the signal that a clean or a replacement is due. Ignoring it does not just mean cloudy water. It means a pump that overheats, a chlorinator that underperforms because flow has dropped, and a pool that starts growing algae because the water is not turning over fast enough. We service Davey, AstralPool, Waterco, Zodiac and Pentair filtration systems. Each brand has different internals, different service intervals and different failure points. A Waterco media filter on bore water in Wanneroo behaves very differently to an AstralPool cartridge filter in Fremantle on scheme water. That is why a one size fits all approach to filter cleaning does not work in Perth.
Cartridge Filter Services
Cartridge pool filters are the most common filter type in residential pools across Perth. They are simple in design but that does not mean they are simple to maintain properly. The pool filter cartridge sits inside the filter housing and uses pleated polyester material to trap particles as water passes through. Over time, the filter pleats accumulate body oils, sunscreen, calcium scale, fine sand from bore water and organic matter that a garden hose alone will not shift.
We start by turning off the pool pump, releasing air pressure through the relief valve and opening the filter housing. The cartridge is carefully removed and inspected for tears, collapsed pleats, cracking at the end caps or discolouration that indicates chemical damage. If the cartridge is still in good condition, we clean it using a regular garden hose with a nozzle attachment, working methodically through each pleat with a steady stream of water to remove debris without damaging the material. For cartridges with heavy build up, particularly from bore water areas like Ellenbrook and Wanneroo where calcium and mineral loads are elevated, we soak the cartridge in a cleaning solution. We use a filter cleaning solution in a large bucket rather than muriatic acid, which can degrade the polyester fibres and shorten filter life. Some pool shops recommend trisodium phosphate based cleaners, but we avoid those because they introduce phosphates back into the system, which feeds algae growth. It is a detail most people miss, but it matters.
Soaking takes a few hours, so we either leave the cartridge in the cleaning solution and return, or swap in a replacement while the dirty one soaks. Some guides online suggest using one gallon of muriatic acid diluted in water, but muriatic acid is toxic to handle without proper ventilation and degrades the filter material with repeated use. We use safer, more effective alternatives.
We also inspect the o ring seal on the filter housing lid. A worn or cracked o ring lets air into the system, which reduces suction and causes the pump to cavitate. We carry replacement o rings and cartridges on the vehicle for most major brands so we can swap them on the spot.

Sand Filter Services
Sand filters are a heavy duty, low maintenance option that suits larger pools and properties with high debris loads. They work by passing pool water through a bed of graded sand or glass media that traps particles as small as 20 to 40 microns. Over time, the sand bed compacts and channels form, which means water finds the path of least resistance and bypasses the filtration media entirely. When that happens, the filter gauge might still read in the normal range but the water clarity drops because the filter is no longer doing its job.
Adrian backwashes and rinses sand filters as part of every service. He also checks the multiport valve for leaks, inspects the internal laterals for cracks and assesses whether the sand or glass media needs replacing. In Perth, bore water from the Gnangara Mound accelerates media degradation. The calcium and iron in the supply coats the sand grains and reduces their ability to trap particles effectively. We have pulled sand media out of filters in Baldivis and Wanneroo that looked like solid rock after three years because the bore water had cemented everything together. If you are on bore, your sand filter needs attention more frequently than the owner’s manual suggests.
We also check the filter tank itself for cracks, especially around the neck and lid. Perth’s heat cycle expands and contracts the housing over the seasons, and older tanks can develop hairline fractures that weep under pressure. Catching that early avoids a flood in the equipment area.

Comprehensive Pool Filter Cleaning
A proper pool filter cleaning goes beyond hosing off cartridges or running a backwash. We conduct a full assessment of the filter housing, inspect internal seals and gaskets including the o ring, and test the multiport valve or internal diverters. During the service, we check for fatigue or cracking in the filter tank, worn lids and build up inside the unit that restricts flow.
For cartridge filters, we measure the pressure before and after cleaning to confirm the gauge returns to its normal range. If it does not, the cartridge has reached the end of its filter life and needs replacing. We carry new filters for most common brands on the vehicle. For sand filters, we inspect the laterals and drain assembly, check for channelling in the media bed and assess whether the sand needs replacing or just a deep rinse.
If you are noticing cloudy water, poor circulation, major debris returning to the pool through the jets, or your pump running louder than usual, it is time for a proper clean of the entire filtration system. Those are not minor issues. They are your system telling you the filter cannot keep up. Before you try to clean a pool surface problem with chemicals, check the filter first. Nine times out of ten, that is where the issue starts.

Full-Service Inspections
Every filter service includes a full system check. We are not just cleaning the filter. We are looking at how the filter performs within the context of your whole pool setup. A clean filter means nothing if the pump is underperforming or the plumbing has a restriction.
Our full service inspection covers checking the pressure gauge before and after the clean, inspecting the filter cartridges or sand media condition, examining the filter tank for cracks and wear, making sure the air relief valve is functioning, clearing skimmer baskets and checking suction lines, inspecting structural components including the lid, clamp band and base, and evaluating pump suction and return flow. Craig Rosendorff described in his review how Adrian came around, assessed what needed doing and got straight to work while another company never even showed up. That is what a full service visit looks like. No waiting around, no guesswork.

Preventative Maintenance
Reactive filter cleaning costs more in the long run. A cartridge that gets cleaned on schedule lasts two to three seasons. A cartridge that gets cleaned only when the water goes cloudy might last one. The same applies to sand media. Regular maintenance extends the life of every component in the filtration system and keeps your pool water clean between visits.
We offer preventative maintenance plans tailored to your filter type, water source and usage. That includes scheduled filter cleaning based on water volume and bather load, backwashing sand filters at the right intervals, replacing cartridges before they fail rather than after, monitoring pressure trends over time, and checking connections from the filter gauge to the hose attachment for wear.
Natasha Manson has been using 1 Pool Care consistently for over five years. In her review she mentioned that her pool is always ready to use due to regular servicing. That consistency comes from a maintenance schedule that is built around her specific setup, not a generic timetable from a brochure.
We also remind you when it is time for the next clean or replacement so you do not have to worry about falling behind. If you need pool chemicals, replacement cartridges or any other pool supplies, we carry stock on the vehicle and keep a full range at our Burns Beach pool shop.

How Do Our Pool Filter Services Work
Here is how the process works from start to finish. You do not need to drain the pool or do anything in advance. Just make sure we can access the equipment area.
Book a service online or by phone. Our pool technician arrives with all necessary tools including a hose, soft brush, diagnostic gear and replacement parts. We turn off the pool pump, release pressure via the air relief valve and open the filter housing. Cartridges are removed and cleaned using a garden hose and cleaning solution, or for sand filters, a backwash and rinse is performed. We inspect components including the filter gauge, tank lid, o ring and valves. The system is reassembled and tested to confirm pressure and flow are restored. You receive a summary of what we found, what we did and what to watch for.
This is not a search for problems to upsell. Adrian has been doing this across Perth for over twenty two years and he has no interest in replacing parts that do not need replacing. If your filter is dirty but still functional, we clean it. If it is beyond saving, we tell you and quote the replacement. That is how a proper pool filter cleaning service should work.

Your filter does not care whether it is a swimming pool in Duncraig or a hot tub in Subiaco. When it is clogged, the whole system suffers. Do not spray it with a garden hose on the grass and hope for the best. Let someone who understands the internals, the pressure tolerances and the local water conditions handle it properly. Whether you need filter cleaning for cartridges or a full sand media replacement, 1 Pool Care covers it.
Adrian and Jo have been running this business from Burns Beach since 2003, servicing pools from Joondalup to Rockingham. We are SPASA accredited and we treat every filter service with the same attention whether it is a one off visit or part of an ongoing maintenance plan. Contact the team, fill in the form or come into our pool shop. We will make sure your pool stays clean and your equipment runs the way it should. That is not a sales pitch. It is just what we do.
