    Why Your Pool Filter Matters More Than You Think

    Most pool owners only think about the filter when something goes wrong. But the filter does more work than the pump or chlorinator. It removes dirt, debris, algae and micro organisms during circulation. Without proper filtration, chlorine cannot keep your pool safe. You end up dosing more chemicals and still getting cloudy water.

    Perth conditions make filters work harder. Bore water through Wanneroo and Ellenbrook carries calcium loads above 300 ppm that cement sand media together. Salt air from the Fremantle Doctor corrodes multiport valve springs along the coast. Debris blown into pools through summer forces dirt through to the filter. If you are not inspecting regularly, small problems create expensive ones.

    Sand filter repairs are the most common job. The multiport valve usually fails first. Cracked housings, worn spider gaskets and seized diverter plates cause water to bypass filtration. We carry replacement gaskets and valve components for AstralPool, Zodiac, Davey, Waterco and Pentair. If the tank has cracked, we determine whether epoxy will hold or replacement makes more sense. We take pride in honest advice.

    Cartridge filter repairs are straightforward. Torn pleats, cracked end caps and damaged o rings are the usual faults. We inspect the cartridge, test flow and advise whether cleaning will restore performance or it has reached end of life. Bore water areas need more attention because calcium builds between the pleats.

    We also repair pool equipment related to filtration including pump seals and pressure gauges. A leaking seal can compromise the whole process.

    Signs Your Pool Filter Needs Repair

    Cloudy water that does not clear after backwashing is the most obvious sign. But there are others.

    Filter pressure sitting 8 to 10 psi above the clean baseline means the media is blocked or channelled and backwashing is no longer effective.

    Water returning through the jets looks dirty or has visible particles. This means water is bypassing the media, usually through a cracked lateral or torn cartridge.

    The multiport valve leaks from the waste port when set to filter. Failed spider gasket. Unfiltered water going back to the pool.

    Your pool pump is working but flow feels weak. The filter may be restricted internally.

    It depends on the fault. A spider gasket replacement is at the lower end. A full sand change with new laterals costs more but can save money year round on chemicals and pump running costs. We quote upfront so there is no hassle.

    That depends on age and condition. A filter under ten years with a sound tank is almost always worth repairing. We assist pool owners by testing flow rates and inspecting internals before recommending either option. We carry an extensive range of parts and supply replacement filters from brands we trust if repair is not viable.

    Cloudy water, high filter pressure, visible dirt returning through jets or leaks from the valve. If backwashing does not restore normal pressure, contact us. We offer pool filter repairs as part of our broader pool maintenance and pool cleaning services so we look at the whole system.

    For hairline cracks in fibreglass tanks, marine grade epoxy rated for water immersion is the minimum standard. We have used this on AstralPool and Waterco tanks where the crack was limited. If the crack is through a stress point or the wall has thinned, epoxy will not hold and we advise replacement. We are always forward with recommendations.
